New York Times article

Here’s an article in the New York Times about one woman’s experience with painkiller addiction. Taking up to 50 Vicodin a day? Crazy! But a good story of hope and recovery, and gaining one’s life back from the struggles of addiction.

Addiction Vaccine?

A couple of weeks ago, Newsweek printed their cover story on finding an addiction vaccine. I think the breadth and depth of the article was amazing- great coverage on new work with the medical side of treatment and the innovations in the recovery process, as well as combining it with a program of recovery.

Thoughts?

Smoking! Killing more than Darfur…

Why do so many in recovery ignore the single biggest killer among us - smoking tobacco. The United Nations (UN) estimates that the conflict in Darfur has left as many as 200,000 dead from violence and disease. How many people die each year from smoking cigarettes?

The Sudanese government has suppressed information by jailing and killing witnesses since 2004 and tampered with evidence such as mass graves to eliminate their forensic values. In addition, by obstructing and arresting journalists, the Sudanese government has been able to obscure much of what has gone on.

The CDC’s official estimate that Cigarette smoking is responsible for more than 430,000 deaths each year. Paralleling this enormous health toll is the economic burden of tobacco use: between $50 billion and $73 billion in medical expenditures and another $50 billion in indirect costs. WOW!

HERE ARE SOME CAUSES OF DEATH…
Alcohol-induced deaths 19,086
Assault (homicide) 16,831
Drug-induced deaths 18,443
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) disease 14,681
Injury by firearms 28,839
Motor Vehicle Accidents 46,378

Recovery needs to extend to smoking. Nicotine is a drug. If your mother never told you, smoking is bad for your health.
